Annie’s Homegrown Macaroni & Cheese Reviewed

If you’re looking for a classic out of the box macaroni & cheese, Annie’s brand just might satisfy your craving. According to their box, Annie’s came out with this product in response to hundreds of requests for an elbow macaroni with a milder and mellower cheese sauce. This mac & cheese is very quick to make. One thing that distinguishes is from other boxed macaroni and cheese is that in order to prepare the sauce, you mix it in with milk separately and then pour it over the pasta. This method seems to eliminate the clumps of powder that sometimes don’t thoroughly dissolve in other products.
Overall, this product has a good flavor. It does live up to its promise of a “classic mild cheese taste.” The sauce is a bit liquidy when you pour it on and while it did solidify somewhat after cooling, it would have been nicer if it had thickened a bit more. This could probably be solved by using a bit less milk than called for.

Compared to that other famous brand of mac & cheese in the blue box, Annie’s is far and away better for you. A one cup serving when prepared as the box directs, contains 280 calories and 4 grams of fat. Kraft’s contains 410 calories and around 18 grams of fat when prepared as directed. Kraft also uses the artificial colorings of Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 to give the cheese its orange color. Annie’s opts for the much healthier all natural Annatto extract.
